Everton beats Liverpool to reach FA Cup 5th round

LONDON (AP): Dan Gosling scored with two minutes left of extra time to put Everton into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory over 10-man Liverpool on Wednesday.

With penalties looming to separate the Merseyside rivals in their replay, the 19-year-old Gosling fired in a deflected chip from Andy van der Meyde's cross. Liverpool was reduced to 10 men with 14 minutes remaining in regulation when Lucas was shown a second yellow card for tripping Joleon Lescott.

Everton will host Aston Villa in the last 16 after Martin O'Neill's side beat Doncaster 3-1. Blackburn defeated Sunderland 2-1 in extra time to set up a meeting with Coventry.

Derby rallied to oust Nottingham Forest 3-2 and will next face Manchester United, which beat the second-tier side in the League Cup semifinals.

The Merseyside derby was the third in 17 days, with 1-1 draws in the Premier League and then in the cup, and at times it looked like it was going to be impossible to prize them apart.

Liverpool's plans were set back after 15 minutes when captain Steven Gerrard, who was supporting striker Fernando Torres, limped off with a suspected hamstring injury.

Leon Osman had a chance the win the match for Everton in the 71st minute, but his thunderous shot hit the outside of the post.

Like Everton, Blackburn relied on substitute Benni McCarthy heading home with two minutes remaining to advance.

David Healy had opened the scoring for Sunderland in the 7th only for Aaron Mokoena to pull Blackburn level 30 minutes later.

At Villa Park, Steve Sidwell was gifted Villa's opener in the 15th, knocking the loose ball into an empty net after Doncaster goalkeeper Neil Sullivan managed to only parry a low drive by Craig Gardner.

Four minutes later, John Carew scored to mark his first start for nearly three months after recovering from a back problem.

The Norway international's shot deflected off Sam Hird and looped in over a stranded Sullivan.

Doncaster pulled one back in first-half stoppage time with Jason Price steering a low shot past United States goalkeeper Brad Guzan into the corner of the net.

Nathan Delfouneso restored Villa's two-goal advantage in the 61st by meeting Nicky Shorey's cross with a glancing header.

"I was delighted with Nathan's performance," O'Neill, the Villa manager, said. "He gave the ball away for their goal but outside of that he was exceptional class.

"For one so young, he is a really good player in the making and I have a lot of faith in his ability for the future."

Forest raced into a two-goal lead in the first 15 minutes, with Chris Cohen scoring after 60 seconds after collecting a return pass from his own short corner. Nathan Tyson added another from the penalty spot after being tripped by Stephen Bywater.

The Derby comeback began in the 27th when Gary Teale's corner was headed home by Rob Hulse and he provided the cross for Paul Green to equalize on the hour. Kris Commons' deflected 74th-minute strike against his former club gave Nigel Clough's Derby a place in the last 16.

Clough played for Forest and his father, Brian Clough, formerly managed both of Wednesday's teams.
