Arsenal striker Adebayor named Africa’s best player

LAGOS: Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor was named African Footballer of the Year on Tuesday.

The Togo international beat Chelsea’s Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien and Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Aboutrika in a poll of coaches and captains of African national teams by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

It is the first major award for the lanky striker, recognised for his goals in the English Premier League and his role in helping Togo qualify for the last phase of the African qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup.

Adebayor, who turns 25 later this month, scored 24 goals in the Premier League last season. He got four goals in three games for Togo in their World Cup qualifiers.

“I’m very happy to have received this award,” he told a gala ceremony in Lagos. “I’m highly honoured by what I have done in African football and now that the World Cup is coming close and is in Africa, we’ll work hard to win the championship.”

South Africa host the 2010 World Cup, for which Togo are seeking to qualify for a second successive tournament. They start the last phase of the qualifiers with a match against Cameroon next month.

Adebayor succeeded Frederic Kanoute of Mali as winner of the award, which last year earned unwanted notoriety when officials decided to give it only to players willing to attend the annual CAF awards ceremony.

It meant Chelsea’s Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba, the popular favourite, was unable to retain the award he won for his performances in 2006.

Draw for Australia, Ji-sung rescues S. Korea with a late equaliser

TOKYO: Japan and Australia shared the spoils in Asian World Cup qualifying yesterday but there was a crucial win for North Korea, who beat Saudi Arabia to leave Nasser Al Johar’s side in serious trouble.

In Teheran, Manchester United star Park Ji-sung came to South Korea’s rescue with an 81st minute strike to cancel out Javad Nekounam’s goal to give them a battling 1-1 draw with Iran.

The Socceroos will feel fortunate to come away from Yokohama with a 0-0 draw after soaking up long periods of pressure, but it leaves them well positioned in Group 1 with 10 points from four games.

With three of their remaining four games at home, Australian coach Pim Verbeek was happy with the result as his side power towards their second consecutive World Cup Finals.

“The reality is that we did not have any preparation but we saw how professional the players were even with the eight hours’ time difference,” he said.

Frustrating day: Japan’s Shinji Okazaki (right) holding his head in disappointment after the 0-0 draw against Australia in their Asian World Cup qualifying match. — AP

“I think they deserve a big compliment. 0-0 away to Japan is a great result.”

Japan remain hot on their heels with two wins and two draws for eight points, while Mahmood Abdulrahman scored a 94th minute winner for Bahrain in their 1-0 victory over Uzbekistan in Tashkent.

It leaves the Uzbeks virtually out of the running with just one point, while Bahrain remain alive on four points, alongside Qatar.

Only the top two teams from each group qualify for South Africa while the third-placed teams play each other with the winners facing Oceania champions New Zealand for the final World Cup berth.

Japan coach Takeshi Okada was pleased to see his team play attacking football but disappointed that they couldn’t convert their chances.

“We made chances and played the kind of soccer we have been looking to play but unfortunately we were unable to get the win we were looking for,” he said, adding that it was nevertheless “a precious point”.

In Pyongyang, North Korea’s drive towards their first World Cup Finals since 1966 stayed on track with a vital 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia, leaving their opponents with a massive uphill task to qualify.

Mun In-guk was the North Korean hero, toe-poking the ball under Saudi keeper Waleed Abdullah in the 29th minute to put his side on seven points in Group 2 after four games.

The Saudis, who have made the last four World Cup Finals, are now in big trouble with just four points and four games to play, starting with a tough trip to Teheran next month to face Iran in a must-win match.

Played on an artificial surface in freezing temperatures at the Kim Il-Sung Stadium in Pyongyang, the Saudis had the opening chance when Tassier Al Jassim picked up the ball in the box but failed to produce the killer touch.

The Koreans soon woke up and were dangerous on the break.

Their patience paid off when captain Hong Yon-Jo’s lovely backheel found In-guk, with the midfielder making no mistake to put his team 1-0 in front, a lead they defended admirably.

Group leaders South Korea now have eight points after their 1-1 draw with Iran, who slip to third place on six points behind North Korea. — AFP

YDPA can act upon...

Jelas sekali kerajaan kini merasa tergugat.

(10:35am) Perak Umno state chief Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his deputy Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi leave Istana Kinta. Najib is expected to chair the state liaison committee meeting to discuss the Barisan candidate for the Perak Mentri Besar's post.

(9:50am) Deputy Prime Minister and Perak Umno chief Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and state Umno deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Bagan Datoh MP) enter Istana Kinta to seek Sultan Azlan Shah’s consent for Barisan to form the new Perak government.

(9:00am) Speaker V. Sivakumar told reporters that he will ask the High Court on Thursday to declare as valid the undated letters of resignation by the three Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen - PKR’s Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi (Behrang) and Mohd Osman Jailu (Changkat Jering) and DAP’s Hee Yit Foong (Jelapang) - who resigned from their respective parties to become Independents who have pledged to support Barisan Nasional.

Najib, Zahid meet Sultan Azlan Shah
IPOH: As Perak Umno chief Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his deputy Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Bagan Datoh) sought Sultan Azlan Shah’s consent to form the next Perak government on Thursday, Pakatan’s state assembly speaker V. Sivakumar turned to the High Court to seek a declaration that the undated letters of resignation of three assemblymen, who declared themselves independent, were valid.

With the return of Bota assemblyman Datuk Nasarudin Hashim to Umno, Barisan now has 28 seats in the state assembly. PKR’s seats in the assembly was reduced to 28 after Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi (Behrang) and Mohd Osman Mohd Jailu (Changkat Jering) and DAP’s Hee Yit Foong (Jelapang) declared themselves Independent and threw their support behind Barisan.

Everton beats Liverpool to reach FA Cup 5th round

LONDON (AP): Dan Gosling scored with two minutes left of extra time to put Everton into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory over 10-man Liverpool on Wednesday.

With penalties looming to separate the Merseyside rivals in their replay, the 19-year-old Gosling fired in a deflected chip from Andy van der Meyde's cross. Liverpool was reduced to 10 men with 14 minutes remaining in regulation when Lucas was shown a second yellow card for tripping Joleon Lescott.

Everton will host Aston Villa in the last 16 after Martin O'Neill's side beat Doncaster 3-1. Blackburn defeated Sunderland 2-1 in extra time to set up a meeting with Coventry.

Derby rallied to oust Nottingham Forest 3-2 and will next face Manchester United, which beat the second-tier side in the League Cup semifinals.

The Merseyside derby was the third in 17 days, with 1-1 draws in the Premier League and then in the cup, and at times it looked like it was going to be impossible to prize them apart.

Liverpool's plans were set back after 15 minutes when captain Steven Gerrard, who was supporting striker Fernando Torres, limped off with a suspected hamstring injury.

Leon Osman had a chance the win the match for Everton in the 71st minute, but his thunderous shot hit the outside of the post.

Like Everton, Blackburn relied on substitute Benni McCarthy heading home with two minutes remaining to advance.

David Healy had opened the scoring for Sunderland in the 7th only for Aaron Mokoena to pull Blackburn level 30 minutes later.

At Villa Park, Steve Sidwell was gifted Villa's opener in the 15th, knocking the loose ball into an empty net after Doncaster goalkeeper Neil Sullivan managed to only parry a low drive by Craig Gardner.

Four minutes later, John Carew scored to mark his first start for nearly three months after recovering from a back problem.

The Norway international's shot deflected off Sam Hird and looped in over a stranded Sullivan.

Doncaster pulled one back in first-half stoppage time with Jason Price steering a low shot past United States goalkeeper Brad Guzan into the corner of the net.

Nathan Delfouneso restored Villa's two-goal advantage in the 61st by meeting Nicky Shorey's cross with a glancing header.

"I was delighted with Nathan's performance," O'Neill, the Villa manager, said. "He gave the ball away for their goal but outside of that he was exceptional class.

"For one so young, he is a really good player in the making and I have a lot of faith in his ability for the future."

Forest raced into a two-goal lead in the first 15 minutes, with Chris Cohen scoring after 60 seconds after collecting a return pass from his own short corner. Nathan Tyson added another from the penalty spot after being tripped by Stephen Bywater.

The Derby comeback began in the 27th when Gary Teale's corner was headed home by Rob Hulse and he provided the cross for Paul Green to equalize on the hour. Kris Commons' deflected 74th-minute strike against his former club gave Nigel Clough's Derby a place in the last 16.

Clough played for Forest and his father, Brian Clough, formerly managed both of Wednesday's teams.

Torres says Liverpool are brimming with confidence

LIVERPOOL: Fernando Torres has told Everton they will face a more confident Liverpool side than at any time this season when the Merseyside rivals meet for the third time in 16 days today.

After defeating Chelsea on Sunday to stay in the title race, Liverpool must overcome Everton at Goodison Park if Rafa Benitez’s side are to keep alive their dream of a Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble.

Having drawn 1-1 at Anfield, the city rivals meet in an FA Cup fourth round replay to decide who faces Aston Villa or Doncaster Rovers in the last 16.

Torres ended his four month Premier League goal drought by scoring both goals as Liverpool moved to within two points of leaders Manchester United with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.

And the Spain striker believes that result has brought the dressing room to life after a stuttering spell which threatened to derail Liverpool’s season.

Everton also held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw in the league last month, but Torres reckons Liverpool are revitalised after the Chelsea match.

“We knew before we faced Chelsea that we needed to win. We have a lot more confidence now, of course,” said Torres, who has netted eight times during an injury-troubled season.

“It’s a very long title race,” the Spain striker added. “We know that United are at the top of the table at the moment but we have time and are going to fight until the end.

“It brings us closer than before, and we know that we still have a chance.”

Torres is expected to start at Goodison Park, where he scored twice on his last visit in the league in September.

Benitez could also recall Yossi Benayoun to the starting line-up after the Israel international’s impressive substitute performance against Chelsea.

With a league game at Portsmouth this Saturday to take into account, Benitez could also include Daniel Agger or Sami Hyypia in the centre of defence.

Long-serving Hyypia is due to be included in Benitez’s Champions League squad list.

The Finland international has not featured in Europe so far this season, but Benitez has confirmed that he will be part of the 25-man pool of players for the knockout stages of the competition where Liverpool face Real Madrid in the last 16.

Benitez has been examining his options before deciding on which players will feature and Hyypia takes his place at the expense of right-back Philipp Degen.

Everton manager David Moyes is expected to keep faith with the same team for which narrowly lost 1-0 at Manchester United on Saturday, Tim Cahill leading the forward line on his own.

Australia international Cahill, normally a midfielder, has been in excellent form lately, scoring twice in the last four games.

Today’s ’s other fourth round replays see an all Premier League clash between strugglers Blackburn and Sunderland and high-flyers Villa take on lower league Doncaster.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest and Derby meet in a Midlands derby clash. — AFP

Football: AC Milan determined to keep Beckham

MILAN: David Beckham will have AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti and vice president Adriano Galliani supporting him if he wants to get out of his Los Angeles Galaxy contract to stay in Italy.

Beckham was halfway through a three-month loan with Milan that will end on March 8.

He has told the Italian media he's enjoyed his return to Europe more than he expected, and while he respected the five-year contract with Los Angeles signed in 2007, he said playing for Milan was "something special."

The Galaxy has reiterated that it wants Beckham back when the loan ends.

But Ancelotti, who has been surprisingly impressed by Beckham, would like the England midfielder to remain at San Siro.

"Nobody can tell what will happen after March 9," Ancelotti told Sky TV Italia.

"He wants to stay here, he has not hidden that fact, but it is a problem between him and LA Galaxy. As a club, we cannot get into this matter.

"Beckham has given a new push to the team in terms of quality and enthusiasm. He has given the team something extra and certainly if he stayed it would make it easier to win the Scudetto."

Such has been Beckham's impact that he was included in Milan's 25-man roster for UEFA Cup games against Werder Bremen on Feb. 18 and 26.

"I am realistic about his future," Ancelotti said.

"I knew that he will be with us until March 9, that is for certain, so we will have to make the most of him during his time here.

"He has given the team all his quality, by his work rate, his talent, his assists and the goals he has scored. He has made an unexpected contribution."

Galliani said the financial benefits of Beckham's presence have also boosted the club.

"I think he does (want to stay), but I can only speak of what the club wants to do and Milan will do everything possible to have Beckham after March," Galliani told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"It is evident that our will is there to keep him until the end of the season or even on a permanent transfer. There is hope, but contracts have to be honored. If the Galaxy want to start negotiations we will be happy to try, but they are right, the agreements are clear - on March 9 Beckham must return to America."

In January, he played in a lucrative friendly with Hannover, and was expected to play some part in a friendly against Rangers in Glasgow on Wednesday.

"(Beckham's marketing appeal) exists and we understand it following the many requests we have received to play friendly games, but it is not only his presence which attracts other clubs," Galliani said.

"We have a group of stars."

Big Phil riled over unfair sacking of Lampard

LONDON: Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari said he hoped the Football Association would overturn the red card shown to midfielder Frank Lampard on Sunday.

Chelsea have submitted an appeal against the red card to the Football Association yesterday.

Lampard was sent off by Mike Riley for a tackle on Xabi Alonso after 60 minutes of the 2-0 defeat at Liverpool but it looked a harsh decision with Alonso appearing to be as much the culprit as the Chelsea player.

“If the referee looks at it on the television maybe he changes the red card for Lampard. As I looked at it, it was a foul by the other player, not Lampard,” Scolari, whose side are now five points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United, told Sky Sports News.

“I don’t understand (the decision) but maybe now after he looks at it again, if he understands what is wrong, he will change the red card and Lampard can play in the next game.

“He can’t play in the next three games because of a mistake.

It is not possible the people in the FA see this and agree.”

Scolari, who felt Riley’s decision changed the game, admitted that Jose Bosingwa was lucky to stay on the pitch after a karate-type kick into the back of Yossi Benayoun when the Liverpool midfielder was killing time in the corner.

“If the referee decided to send off Bosingwa I would have understood. A red card for this I would accept, but not Lampard’s,” Scolari said.

Lampard successfully appealed against a red card last year when he was sent off against West Ham United. — Reuters

World No. 1 calls for fewer hardcourt tournaments

MELBOURNE: Rafa Nadal has marked his breakthrough victory at the Australian Open by calling for a reduction in the number of hardcourt tournaments to save top players from injuries and burnout.

Despite having just claimed his first grand slam title on a hardcourt, the world No. 1 said there were too many tournaments played on the surface.

“Hardcourt surface is tougher than grass or clay for the body, and all the time we are playing more on this surface,” the Spaniard told reporters yesterday. “In my humble opinion, we have to change that a bit more.”

More than half the season is played on hardcourt, including indoor carpet, while a month is played on grass and the rest on clay.

Nadal has made no secret of his preference for clay after winning the French Open four times and had previously been reluctant to criticise hardcourts because of his failure to win a Grand slam title on them.

“I can say that (now) because I’ve won a grand slam on hardcourt,” he said, referring to his stunning five-set victory over Roger Federer in Sunday’s Australian Open final. “Before, if I said that, a lot of people would think ‘he (just) wants to change because he’s a clay player’. — Reuters

Nadal downplays talk of him as undisputed king of tennis

MELBOURNE: Newly crowned Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal said the fear of a sudden end to his Grand Slam spree is inspiring him to take his tennis to another level after his titanic victory over Roger Federer.

The Spaniard is the undisputed king of men’s tennis after he surged home to prevent Federer from equalling the all-time majors record in an epic five-setter in Sunday’s final in Melbourne.

Full of bite: Rafael Nadal posing with the Australian Open trophy during a photocall in Melbourne yesterday. — AP

The 22-year-old holds a special place in tennis, capturing his sixth major title in only his 20th Grand Slam tournament, second only to the strike-rate of Sweden’s Bjorn Borg (18 tournaments and six months younger).

By comparison, American Pete Sampras, who holds the record number of 14 Grand Slam wins, won his sixth major in his 25th Grand Slam while Federer reached that mark in his 26th major.

Nadal also became the first Spanish man to win the Australian Open.

His gripping 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-2 triumph in four hours and 23 minutes improved his record over Federer to 13-6 and stretched his lead over the Swiss in the world rankings to more than 3000 points.

But although the world number one is at the height of his tennis powers and holds three of the four Grand Slams, he is cautious about mapping out what he can achieve in the game.

“I have six (majors) right now. I’m happy with my six and I am going to continue to try my best every day to improve my tennis and to continue to win matches and titles,” Nadal said after his victory.

“But I know everything is very difficult. Every title, I know how tough it is to win every one.

“I don’t know if I’m going to win more. When I won my first one I didn’t know if I was going to win more.

“You never know when that (will) stop. So you have to be always cautious and you have to be humble to continue working.”

Nadal is the current holder of the French Open, Wimbledon and Australian Open titles, with the US Open the only Grand Slam yet to elude him.

The Spaniard is bidding for his fifth consecutive title at Roland Garros at the season’s next Grand Slam, starting on May 24, and weeks later will defend his Wimbledon crown after ending Federer’s run of five titles at the All England club last year.

“This is very special for me — it’s a dream to win a hardcourt Grand Slam,” he said.

“I’ve worked very hard all my life to improve my tennis outside of clay courts so I’m very happy with the (Australian) title.”

Nadal played down talk he was the undisputed king of men’s tennis.
